Time Away for the Fixer

Posted in Church Planting, Following Jesus, Leadership on November 11, 2009 by respondingtogod

I was able to get away a few days ago just to recharge spiritually and let God speak to me more clearly.  I really resisted going because I didn’t want to spend the money and I am a fixer so I felt like taking that time away would just put me further behind with what needed to be done.  I’m such an idiot sometimes.  I knew better.

God spoke to me about a few things but it wasn’t what I was hoping for.  It wasn’t about the next cool thing that will help Canvas or the next move I need to make as a leader.  He spoke to me about me.

He said (in different terms)…Be more concerned about what God is doing IN you than THROUGH you.  Its about what I’m becoming.  In short, if you are tuned into the Holy Spirit at work in your life, the rest will fall into place much easier.  Now, there is alot to staying “tuned into the Holy Spirit” but, nevertheless, for a fixer like me that was refreshing!

Bikes or Bust coming soon…

I’m excited about our Bikes or Bust coming up in December.  We are going to give 100 bikes away to kids in and around Savannah that might not otherwise have such a merry Christmas.  We currently have 4 schools working with us (maybe more to come) and we are partnering with the Walmart in Pooler to host the event.

Check out www.savannahbikesorbust.com for all the details.  Be patient with the site, I just put it up and am in the middle of editing the details…but keep checking back over the next day or two.

One Third

Canvas Church is about 3 things.  That means that 1/3 of who we are is Action.  Action doesn’t just mean doing some events to make ourselves feel better.  Action means being a church that is missional…or being intentional about spending alot of time and money on people that don’t necessarily go to our church…but they might join a movement.

Its about BEING Jesus to people.  Its about putting ourselves out there and risking for the sake of love.

One of my biggest fears is that we become all about gathering together on Sunday morning…think about how tragic and selfish that would be.

Great Sunday!

Yesterday was a great day at Canvas Church!  Despite the band doing an awesome job leading us in worship, we had a special prayer for one of our military families.  Jose is getting deployed this Friday along with many of other stationed around Savannah.   Liz is, of course, going to be left here for a year without her husband and I can’t imagine what that must be like.  It is our responsibility as a church to take care of these dear people who sacrifice much to ensure our freedom and safety.

Whether you agree with what they are being sent to do, please pray for and serve our military and their families.  It IS a way we can show the love of Christ!

- We have been working with a school very near to where we want to be in West Chatham. We are very close to having that be a done deal. It’s been God’s timing.
- Several things coming down the pipe soon. Bikes or Bust, Savannah bridge run, neighborhood block parties, etc. More details coming soon.
- Dont forget about the 300 bricks campaign. Go to www.savannahcanvas.com
- “Directions” series is going well… But we are already working on a Christmas series. Invite, invite, invite!
